William Johnson Jowett

was a ‘Sign Artist and Advertising Contractor’ in Leeds. He designed the famous ‘Hall’s Distemper’ hoardings that decorated the embankment of the Great North Railway about the turn of the century.

He died in 1896, aged 44, of chronic nephritis, an inflammation of the kidneys, having been in a uremic coma for 24 days.
